Activities and programs are highlights
Our new club year began in August, and with it comes renewed energy, fresh ideas and a strong leadership team. Carol Merten will serve as president of the executive board for the 2025-2026 club year, joined by Christine Kniahyncky as vice president, Cindy McGowan as secretary, Liz Robert as treasurer, and Renie Martin as past president and parliamentarian. This dedicated leadership team has been working with committee chairs and activity coordinators to shape an exciting direction for the year ahead.
This year’s committee chairs bring a wealth of experience, creativity and enthusiasm to their roles! M’Lu Colbourn will continue to support our members with Hospitality, Lynn Parke will oversee membership, Beth Surrell will manage the club newsletter, and Mary Rea will handle publicity. The Scholarship Committee will be co-chaired by Annette Stewart and Carolyn Locke. Our Social Committee co-chairs include Connie Gallagher, Margaret Hardy and Barbara Hanson, while Pam Madigan will continue to manage our club’s web presence. With such a talented and committed leadership team in place, our club is well-positioned for a productive and successful year.
Of course, at the center of our club’s activities and programs are the interest groups that come together on a regular basis, from weekly to monthly, depending on the activity. There are 15 dedicated activity coordinators who plan enriching activities for Mahjong, Bridge, Bunco, Book Discussions, Fun and Games, Pickleball, Scrabble, Arts and Culture, and Adventure Walks.
Outdoor adventures and scenic walks were a highlight of August as we made the most of this beautiful summer month. A special moment was the club picnic at Cuvier Park in La Jolla, where we gathered above the Pacific Ocean with family and friends, and enjoyed a stunning sunset. We continued our summer fun with a scenic hike around Shelter Island, taking in the fresh bay breeze and panoramic views of downtown San Diego. These monthly walks not only keep us active, but also strengthen the camaraderie among club members. A special thank you to our Adventure Walks coordinators Joni Low and Cathy Denis for thoughtfully planning our monthly outdoor excursions.
Arts and culture are always a treat, and in August we enjoyed a guided tour of the Oceanside Museum of Art, which highlighted the exceptional work of local artists. A beautiful installation was on display of Mexican yarn art – rich in both color and cultural history. In September, we look forward to visiting the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum, located in the heart of old Chinatown. Thank you to our Arts and Culture coordinators Barbara Measelle, Deidre Spruce and Penney Homel, for organizing these cul-
tural experiences, made even more enjoyable with delightful lunches.
