High Tide Society will return to Hoyt Park on July 13 for a live performance as part of the Scripps Ranch Symphony in the Park free summer concert series.

“We have played at the summer concert in Scripps Ranch twice within the past few years. We are always happy to come back. The park is a great venue, and it is perfect for a summer concert. The crew that puts on the concerts is amazing to work with,” High Tide Society drummer and band manager John Perkins said.

The free concert is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and will last about an hour and a half.

“The music we generally play is ’70s and ’80s yacht rock. Think Hall & Oates, Toto, Steely Dan. We will also be playing ’70s funk disco, which will include artists Rick James and Michael Jackson,” Perkins said. “It’s nice because yacht rock has definitely made a comeback for the younger generation, so they are in tune with that genre. We often end up playing that genre at weddings for folks in their 20s and 30s.”

Perkins hopes that the music brings movement to the audience.

“The music is very upbeat and keeps everything flowing. We want people to get up and dance, sing or do whatever they would like. We want everyone to have a good time at their local summer concert,” he said.

There will be eight members of the band performing: Jonesy Jones (vocals, trombone, percussion), Sean Aguirre (vocals), Matt Gorney (bass), Matt Clowminzer (guitar), Jerry DeMink (guitar), Kevin Capacia (keyboard), Troy Jennings (saxophone) and John Perkins (drummer).

The band primarily performs at private events, but occasionally performs at summer concerts such as the Scripps Ranch Symphony in the Park. The band members will be performing at two other public summer concerts this season, including at El Cajon and Coronado.

Perkins founded the band a little more than 10 years ago.

“I just wanted to put together a group of musicians to bring ’70s and ’80s music back. It’s been fun playing together, and we have all been playing for a very long time,” he said.

Members of the audience are encouraged to bring cloth blankets and low-back beach chairs early. They can bring their own food and beverages.

This concert is sponsored by US Bank.

There will also be free face-painting for children, compliments of Emma Lefkowitz and the Barron Real Estate Team.

“We are excited to perform in front of an audience that is kind of built in. They may not know us, but we are hoping to gain a larger audience after performing in front of them,” Perkins said.
