The Pantry is a hub for food and connection
Remember playing “store” as a kid? Stocking shelves, counting change, chatting with your “customers.” A group of San Diego seniors has taken those childhood memories and turned them into something real, meaningful, and deeply needed. It’s called The Pantry at The Glen at Scripps Ranch retirement community.
Founded in 2019 by sisters and residents Sue Moxon and Jan Chitwood, The Pantry has expanded well beyond a small convenience shop inside a retirement community, it’s now serving as a lively hub for connection and community.
Open seven days a week and staffed by more than 75 resident volunteers, The Pantry provides residents with everything from frozen meals and shampoo to homemade cards, handcrafted gifts and stamps.
Behind the scenes, Sue manages accounting, Jan scouts deals and stocks inventory, Kate Bower coordinates the growing volunteer team, and an increasing number of residents help with the shopping. It’s a labor of love that brings neighbors closer every day.
Everything is sold at or near cost, with the proceeds going to The Glen’s employee appreciation fund. But what’s most special are the bonds formed.
“It feels like an old-fashioned country store,” said both Kate and Jan. “People drop by just to say hi or share local gossip and stories about visiting grandkids. It’s become a little hub of connection.”
According to the National Institute on Aging, strong social ties can help older adults live longer, healthier lives and lower their risk of depression and cognitive decline. The Pantry showcases how purpose and camaraderie thrive at The Glen at Scripps Ranch, and how a shelf full of essentials can also be filled with heart.
