Welcome Club entertains its theater fans

Theater fans who belong to Welcome Club were treated to two outstanding events in September.

At the regular monthly meeting, Jill Drexler, the artistic director for Scripps Ranch Theatre, delighted the members with a detailed description of her role in the management of script and cast selection for the productions at our local playhouse. Her many years of experience at the job provided colorful examples of how she reads, chooses and promotes production of plays to the rest of the management staff. Once the play is approved, she interviews and auditions the actors for roles and assists with directing, she explained.

Later in the month at a Gadabouts event, dozens of Welcome Club members were dazzled at the journey they took through 100 years of America’s musical history performed at the Lamb’s Players Theatre in Coronado. The music and songs included hits from the jazz age through rock and roll. The large and talented cast of musicians and singers brought the audience to applause multiple times during the two-and-a-half-hour performance, and to their feet at the finale.

October will provide another entertainment experience. This Gadabouts event will take the club members to KPBS, a valued public media station. The group will take a behind-the-scenes tour of the radio and television studios that provide us with daily international and local news, and TV programs like “Finding your Roots” and “Antiques Roadshow.”

Coming up in November, the classic music lovers in the club will launch their first group trip to the Poway Performing Arts Center for a holiday celebration concert. Lynn Owens, who organized the club’s new event, has scheduled members to enjoy two Symphony Sundays in 2027.

While these extraordinary events draw larger numbers, Welcome Club members also enjoy their smaller regular meetings of craft, card, book, Bunco and game groups.

If the club seems like a comfortable place for you to partake in local gatherings with smaller groups of neighbors, view the website at Scrippsranchwelcomeclub.com.
