Artist wins Best of Miniatures
Scripps Ranch resident Pati Johnson won the Best of Miniatures award in the San Diego Watercolor Society’s (SDWS) July 2026 Member’s exhibition “Patriotic Sagas.” Johnson’s painting titled “Some Like it Hot” was selected by nationally known juror Stephanie Goldman for this honor, out of 218 entries.
“I love how fully this piece represents the theme. The cut-out collage approach featuring the Hotel Del is inspired, and the two figures rendered in a flat, almost cartoon-like style say so much about how people relate to the beach experience. The hotel in the background, the expanse of sand, the ocean and waves – it all says Coronado. And it is absolutely patriotic – red bathing suit, blue trunks,” Goldman said.
Johnson was raised in Burbank, and loved to draw and paint from a young age. Her passion is to create art that puts a smile on your face and makes you feel happy.
The exhibit will run through Aug. 1 at the SDWS gallery, 2528 Dewey Road in Liberty Station.
