SR Old Pros hold horse shoe tourney

Thirty-two players on 16 teams competed in the 23rd annual Scripps Ranch Old Pros Horse Shoe Tournament on Saturday, June 17 in the sand pit at Spring Canyon Community Park.

The event, organized by Old Pros members Steve Northcote and Allen Flanders, was a double elimination tourney.

“I am a horse shoe player, not a good one,” replied Northcote when asked about his participation in the sport.

“I don’t know if I’d call it a sport,” he said.

Northcote said he played in many of the past tournaments but not this one, adding that he once won the tournament and finished last one time.

“It’s a humbling game,” he said.

Northcote didn’t share any advice or strategies regarding the art and science of horse shoes, but he did explain his views about the type of players who tend to be the best in these tournaments.

“The guys who are actually very good are the guys who are pitchers in softball,” he said. “Softball pitchers tend to be the best (horse shoe) throwers.”
