Visit Cool Zones to escape the heat
The Scripps Miramar Ranch Library and the Scripps Ranch Recreation Center are two official Cool Zones where residents may gather to escape the severe heat.
The Scripps Miramar Ranch Library is located at 10301 Scripps Lake Drive and is open 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday; and 11:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. It is closed Sunday.
The Scripps Ranch Recreation Center is located at 11454 Blue Cypress Drive and is open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Tuesday; 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday; and noon-4 p.m. Sunday.
The San Diego County Health & Human Services Agency has designated a number of locations as Cool Zones to provide relief from hot weather for citizens who do not have access to air conditioning. For more information call 800-510-2020.
Local singer competing at County Fair
Scripps Ranch singing sensation Amalea Ribeiro will be showcasing her talent at the San Diego County Fair, where she will perform at the “In the Spotlight” vocal competition on June 27. Ribeiro, earned a position as a finalist and will compete against nine other youngsters in the Youth Division for 8 to 12-year-olds. Winners will receive cash awards and trophies. The “In the Spotlight” competition will begin at 3 p.m. on the Showcase Stage at the fair.
Ribeiro recently earned second place in the RB Idol singing competition and will participate in the Spirit of the Fourth Parade in Rancho Bernardo and sing for the audience prior to the July 4 fireworks at Bernardo Heights Middle School.
Police end search, still seek information
The San Diego Police Department continues to request help from local citizens in locating Taiheng Sun, although the department has ended its official search for the time being. Police and volunteers searched for the missing man most of the weekend. A large search involving volunteers was organized through the efforts of the Scripps Ranch Civic Association and law enforcement, including the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
A Scripps Ranch resident, Sun was last seen on June 15 in his home on Maple Grove Lane near Sycamore Trail Road.
Police describe Sun as an Asian male, 85 years of age, 5-feet-6-inches tall, weighing 140 pounds, with gray hair and brown eyes. He has been missing from the Stonebridge area since Thursday. Sun suffers from Alzheimer's and speaks little English. He is known to take walks and should be on foot; he does not drive a vehicle. He was home when his family left for the day, but was nowhere to be found when they returned.
Police ask anyone with information to call them at (619) 531-2000.
