Where can young and old alike find some peace, quiet and nature during a full day at the 2017 San Diego County Fair? The Pollinator Trail of course, located in Family Funville.

What exactly is a pollinator? Insects, birds, bats and the wind are all pollinators, taking pollen between flowering plants, which allows the plants to seed and reproduce. Pollination is a very important part of the life cycle of plants.

Across the nation, pollinators are disappearing. The Pollinator Trail exhibit at the San Diego County Fair provides San Diegans with a look at how they can help pollinators like butterflies, bees and hummingbirds thrive. This exhibit aims to create awareness about the importance and plight of our pollinators.

For the third year, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is one of several partners with the San Diego Pollinator Alliance hosting the Pollinator Trail exhibit at the San Diego County Fair. The exhibit has several teaching components about what can be done for pollinators at an apartment, house or garden. This includes three large native gardens, an example of a pollinator patio garden, a live honeybee exhibit and the Free Flight House where visitors can come face to face with live flying butterflies.

Pollinators are critical for our food supply, and they’re in trouble. For example, the Monarch butterfly population has declined nearly 80 percent over the past 20 years. Conserving pollinators and their habitat has positive cascading effects, leading to conservation of other animals like songbirds and mammals. Pollinators also support healthy ecosystems that clean the air, improve water quality, reduce soil erosion, flood protection and support other wildlife. Our well-being depends on healthy pollinators.

The Pollinator Trail is located at the Farm in Family Funville through July 4. Visit sdfair.com.
