Scripps Ranch Weekend Review
Although early August is traditionally used as a time for families to get in their last-minute vacations before school gets back in session, the past weekend was full of local activities in Scripps Ranch.
Blues at Hoyt Park
The Bill Magee Blues Band brought authentic Chicago blues to Hoyt Park Sunday evening for a free outdoor concert at Hoyt Park, part of the popular Scripps Ranch Symphony in the Park Series.
While the crowd was not as enormous as the one that showed up for the June concert earlier this summer, the temperatures were much more mild and members of the audience seemed more comfortable, thoroughly enjoying themselves.

The crowd appeared to appreciate the fact that blues legends rarely perform in Scripps Ranch. During his long career, Magee has performed with Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Otis Redding, John Lee Hooker, Wilson Picket and Bo Diddley. The end of each set was met with a round of respectful cheers from the audience. As always, Magee and his bandmates put in total effort during their performance in the warm sun.

Great garage sale fundraiser

Apparently, customers, bargain hunters and well-wishers could not wait to visit the special garage sale fundraiser held by Susan Kilmer and Anthony Miranda to benefit Miranda’s sister who is expecting a baby girl stricken with spina bifida on Saturday, Aug. 12. The garage sale was set to begin at 7 a.m. but a crowd had already gathered by 6:45 a.m.
Izabella Miranda, age 8, did her part by happily staffing her lemonade and brownie stand, raising more funds for the worthy cause. By the way, the brownies were delicious.
Cool funk at Scripps Ranch Marketplace
The band Latifahtron showcased its brand of progressive funk to Scripps Ranch Marketplace on Sunday.

The beautiful sound of lead vocalist Latifah Smith flowed beyond the gazebo and through the parking lot, not only attracting visitors, but providing a pleasant vibe for early evening shoppers. Her rendition of “Killing Me Softly with His Song” was particularly striking.
As expected, each band member was totally enveloped by their music, and the audience showed its sincere appreciation with rounds of heartfelt applause following each tune. Listeners could not help being impressed.
