Fire interrupts peaceful morning
Brown smoke billowed into a brilliant blue sky at a Scripps Ranch shopping center on the morning of Dec. 30 at about 10:40 a.m.
The smoke was coming from the roof of Calibanzo Hummus & Grill, 9880 Hibert St., but it soon turned white and eventually dissipated as employees acted quickly to extinguish the flames from inside. One employee confirmed that there was a fire in the kitchen of the restaurant.
The mood outside remained calm as employees of Calibanzo and nearby businesses, as well as about a dozen customers, left the buildings and waited to the side and in the parking lot.
One police car was first to respond, and then a fire truck, but smoke was no longer visible. Six fire trucks converged on the scene, as did several police and other emergency vehicles from as far away as Poway. Firefighters methodically searched the buildings and made sure everyone had evacuated from nearby businesses. The firefighters hauled ladders to the back of the building and extended a ladder from one of the trucks to check the roof for hot spots.
