Rain expected to continue today

Scripps Ranch experienced steady rain during Monday evening, turning heavier in the early morning hours with wind gusts. The rain, though inconvenient at times, is a welcome reprieve from the extremely dry weather conditions plaguing Southern California during autumn 2017, causing hazardous wildfire conditions which sparked several disastrous fires, including the Lilac Fire in North San Diego County.

The National Weather Service reported high confidence that there would be moderate to heavy rain and strong winds (30-40 mph locally to 50 mph) impacting this morning’s commute, and the agency was correct. Accidents and slow traffic caused by the rain is making today’s commute difficult. The rain and winds drenched parents and students as they walked to local schools.

A Pacific storm is bringing periods of strong, gusty winds into Tuesday evening, according to the National Weather Service. Strong, gusty south to southeast winds developed in advance of the cold front early this morning, shifting to the west. Winds will decrease tonight.

While winds have died down and rain has lessened for now, it is expected to return later this morning and in the afternoon. Today, expect more showers with possible thunderstorms after 10 a.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. It will be breezy, with a southwest wind between 15 and 25 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent.

Tonight, showers are likely with possibly a thunderstorm before 10 p.m., then a chance of more showers during the late evening. West winds tonight will be between 10 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. The chance of precipitation tonight is 70 percent.

A 20 percent chance of showers is predicted before 10 a.m. Wednesday. Then, the sun will return, and the skies will remain mostly clear as dry conditions will prevail once again.

Today, residents are asked to watch for broken tree limbs and downed palm fronds. The stronger gusts could down trees and cause isolated property damage.

Areas of urban and small stream flooding should continue through the commute, with doppler radar indicating continued moderate to heavy rainfall ongoing. Flooding of low water crossings in Fashion Valley is expected. Significant impacts for the morning commute should continue. Locations that will likely experience flooding include Fashion Valley, Oceanside, Carlsbad, Vista, Escondido, Poway and San Diego.

The National Weather Service warns motorists to turn around if approaching a street with significant water puddling or streaming through it. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
