Windy conditions and dry weather
Moderate to strong Santa Ana winds continue across San Diego through Monday afternoon, Jan. 29, according to the National Weather Service. A High Wind Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. tonight and a Red Flag Warning has been issued.
Unseasonably warm temperatures descended upon San Diego this weekend. Sunday, Jan. 28, set a record for high January temperatures across Southern California. Miramar reported the hottest temperature in the nation Sunday with a toasty 91 degrees.
The strongest winds will be this morning. There will be a possibility of minor wind damage due to the strong winds, with broken tree limbs and debris, and also difficult travel conditions, especially through the canyons and foothills. Areas of east to northeast winds are expected to be around 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 55 mph possible in some areas of the county.
A High Wind Warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected or occurring. Strongest winds are expected near the mountain ridge tops in the inland valleys in San Diego County. Expect locally reduced in blowing dust at times in the inland valleys. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.
Red Flag Warning
The Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. this evening. A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
Surface high pressure over the Great Basin will bring periods of moderate to locally strong and gusty east to northeast winds along and below coastal mountains slopes and passes and canyons today along with low humidity. Expect low humidity today around 8 to 12 percent.
Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning should be avoided.
There will be poor recovery of humidity tonight with Tuesday humidity nearly as dry as those today. A slight recovery in humidity is expected on Wednesday with weak onshore flow.
