Fresh produce from the good earth
There is no doubt the foodies in Scripps Ranch, and throughout San Diego, love their fresh produce. That’s one of the big draws to the many farmer’s markets that dot the county.
The Scripps Ranch Farmer’s Market is no different as its selection of farmers sell their home-grown and freshly-harvested goods each Saturday. Guillermo Magana is one of the farmers who brings his produce to the local market for customers, with the help of Claribel Martinez.
This couple makes the trip all the way down from Magana’s farm in Riverside each week. In fact, they sell their products at about three local farmer’s markets down here. Martinez said they have been selling at the Scripps Ranch Farmer’s Market for a little more than a year.
Last week they had an ample supply of fresh produce to offer. They had fresh asparagus, tomatoes, kale, melons and cherry tomatoes.
“The best sellers are the strawberries. After that, it’s probably the green beans and then the watermelon and cantaloupe,” Martinez said.
Farming has been in Magana’s family for many years, and he has owned his own farm for about five years.
There must be something special about working the earth every day, cultivating quality products, then seeing customers enjoy shopping for the items.
“You get to know new people. Great customers. I like it,” Martinez said.
See the fresh produce available from Guillermo Magana’s farm during the next three Saturday’s at the Scripps Ranch Farmer’s Market. Unfortunately, the local market will be forced to close after that because the present location is being redeveloped and a new location was not found.
However, the Scripps Ranch Farmer’s Market will be open Oct. 13, 20 and 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 10380 Spring Canyon Road, in the Innovations Academy parking lot.
The final day, Oct. 27, will be a very special Trick or Treat Day for kids. Families with children are encouraged to dress in costume and kids should bring a bag to hold the treats they will receive from the many vendors. Several fun activities will be available to keep the children happy all day. Visit srfm.org.
