Falcons overwhelm San Diego High
A large crowd was on hand to witness the Scripps Ranch High School (SRHS) varsity football team put on a show of skills in the team’s season home opener as it soundly defeated the San Diego High School Cavers 42-14 on Sept. 3.
The Falcons appeared to be well-coached and well-prepared as the team got off to an impressive start, scoring early and often. The score was 21-0 by the time a few minutes had elapsed in the second quarter. SRHS scored on the ground and in the air, including a beautifully-executed bomb that went for a TD.
The San Diego High offense was helpless against the Scripps Ranch defense. The SRHS coaches attempted to put the game away early by having the kickoff team attempt an on-side kick in the first half. The Cavers fell on the ball, but failed to score despite the favorable field position. The SRHS defense also came up with a few turnovers. Meanwhile, the Falcons offense appeared to make few mistakes.
The SDHS Cavers came alive with a fortunate, improbable pass reception that brought them into SRHS territory. But the Falcons defense thwarted their attempts to score in the second quarter, as it did before as the Cavers threatened, but were shut down again and again in the first half.
The Falcons were up 28-0 at half-time, and things didn’t go much better for San Diego High in the second half.
Scheduled upcoming games for the Falcons varsity football team include an away game at Elsinore High School on Sept. 10 and another away game at Sweetwater High School on Sept. 17. SRHS returns to play its next home game against Point Loma High School on Oct. 1 with a 7 p.m. start time.
