The Scripps Ranch Tree Lighting returns

The 39th Scripps Ranch Girl Scouts Tree Lighting event kicked off the holiday season and attracted a happy crowd to Jerabek Park on Dec. 5 this year for in-person festivities and a toy drive benefiting Toys for Tots.

Scripps Ranch Girl Scout Troop 3958 hosted the tree lighting this year. The event was a big deal after a year’s absence due to the pandemic. It was so important that District 5 San Diego City Councilmember Marni von Wilpert was in attendance, as was San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria.

But the biggest celebrity was Santa Claus, himself. The jolly old elf greeted the children, posed for photos and listened to gift requests.

Besides the collection of items for the Toys for Tots program, activities included a bake sale, arts and crafts, and singing around the tree by individual Girl Scout troops. The bake sale benefited the S.H.A.R.E program which helps girls who want to become Girl Scouts with the financial aspects of joining.
