Memorial Day services go online
Memorial Day commemorations in San Diego are going virtual this year. With COVID-19 preventing large gatherings, four of San Diego’s most iconic locations are collaborating to hold the first online live-streaming tribute, May 25, to honor fallen military heroes and salute today’s frontline heroes.
No public spectators will be permitted at Miramar National Cemetery or at any of the commemoration video locations.
The Fort Rosecrans and Miramar National Cemetery Support Foundations, the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial, and the USS Midway will each hold approximately 15-minute tributes that will be streamed live on Memorial Day from 9 to 10 a.m. at www.sandiegomemorialdaylive.com.
Mark Bailey, National University’s director of public safety outreach and former San Diego news anchor, will host the ceremony from the decks of the Midway.
The hour-long virtual tribute will include remarks from local civic and military officials, Memorial Day video messages from state and national leaders, bagpipe and bugler performances, a wreath laying and a missing-man flyby. Event participants will adhere to social distancing requirements.
Mayor to San Diegans: ‘Stay Classy’
As dine-in restaurants and in-store retail begin to reopen across the City of San Diego, Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer was joined by San Diego Police Department Chief David Nisleit, San Diego Fire-Rescue Lifeguard Division Chief James Gartland and Imam Wali Fardan to remind San Diegans of the importance of complying with physical distancing, face covering, and other public health rules to continue to prevent the spread of COVID-19 during this Memorial Day Weekend.
“Let’s support local workers and restaurants not only by giving them our business, but by following public health rules that keep all of us safe,” Faulconer said. “We’ve all worked so hard, so let’s enjoy our progress but not give up the gains we’ve made. Whether you’re on the sand or at a shop this weekend, stay classy out there San Diego.”
Yanni’s will be closed May 24, 25
Yanni’s Bar & Grill, 12015 Scripps Highlands Drive, be closed this Sunday, May 24, and Monday, May 25, for Memorial Day Weekend.
While Yanni’s has been closed, employees have done some sprucing up at the restaurant and repainting inside and out. They have prepared our spaces for appropriate social distancing. Initially, the restaurant will utilize its patios for dining and will continue its curbside take-out options.
COVID-19 cases in 92131
The County of San Diego reported cases of coronavirus in the 92131 ZIP Code area of Scripps Ranch remain at 15. Cases in Mira Mesa are up to 92. Poway has 36 cases. San Diego County reports the cases, broken down by residence listed for each patient.
Walk commemorates anniversary of D-Day
Donnie Edwards, a two-time All-Pro and a 2002 Pro Bowl selection who played 13 seasons with the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs and San Diego Chargers, and the Best Defense Foundation have teamed up with Events.com to host a Walk to commemorate the 76th anniversary of D-Day on Saturday, June 6.
The Walk is an opportunity for people to offer their support for America’s WWII veterans. Any time during the day or night on June 6, participants are encouraged to get out and walk five kilometers (5K or 3.1 miles), which represents the distance from Omaha Beach to Pointe Du Hoc on the shores of Normandy, France.

There is no cost to simply get out and participate in the Walk on June 6, however there are a number of options available to sign up and make a straight donation to the Foundation, or make a contribution to participate in the Walk and receive some great commemorative items.
The Best Defense Foundation’s mission is to help military veterans and their families. A cornerstone of the program is Edwards’ commitment to bring WWII Veterans back to foreign battlefields to help them find closure and camaraderie with their brothers in arms.
