Library update from SR Friends of the Library
As we hope you know by now, the Scripps Miramar Ranch Library has closed temporarily in order for the much needed and long anticipated replacement of the library’s roof and HVAC system. After a hiatus of more than two years, work on the parking lot expansion has finally resumed. As of press time, work on the roof is reportedly progressing nicely and is more than 50 percent completed. Preliminary work on the HVAC system is well underway. The library is expected to be closed for approximately seven months more and, if all goes smoothly, it should reopen sometime during this coming winter.
Accessing library services: During the time the library is closed, books and other materials can be returned to the Mira Mesa Branch Library or to any library in the San Diego Public Library (SDPL) system (sandiego.gov/public-library/locations). Note that this does not include the Poway Library, which cannot accept SDPL books. When placing a hold through their online SDPL account, library patrons will be prompted to select the branch library where they’d like to pick-up their books. With school out, we know that the many children’s programs sponsored by the Scripps Ranch Friends of the Library will be missed as well as the special programs for adults. This might be a good time to explore the free programs available at other branch libraries; check the events calendar on the SDPL website for information.
Thank You to the Women’s Club: The Scripps Ranch Friends of the Library (SRFOL) is very pleased to acknowledge the recent generous donation from the Scripps Ranch Women’s Club. Again this year, the Women’s Club has designated their gift toward enhancing the children’s area. This will be used to purchase a large set of oversized blocks, a key item on our Youth Services Librarian’s “wish list.” When our library reopens, we’re sure that this new construction set will be welcomed by our youngest builders!
In the meantime, even though the Scripps Miramar Ranch Library is currently closed, the Friends of the Library remains active, and your tax-deductible donations are always appreciated and will be acknowledged. Consider becoming a part of the SRFOL’s goal of making our refurbished library even more special.
SRFOL is alive and well: SRFOL continues to meet and plan for the reopening of the library as well as to advocate for our library’s needs. At the June SRFOL board meeting, a budget for the upcoming 2026-27 fiscal year was reviewed, and SRFOL expects to continue its long tradition of robust support for our well-loved library and community gathering spot. Seed library news: The Seed Library, which is sponsored by SRFOL and was founded in collaboration with Sustainable Scripps Ranch, has been relocated from the library for the duration of the closure. The Seed Library has a large selection of seeds – including flowers, herbs, and vegetables – available without charge to community members. Those who receive seeds are encouraged to harvest and return some seeds to the library in order to perpetuate the collection and share with other gardeners, although this is optional. Newer acquisitions include many interesting veggie varieties from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, donated by Vlada’s Seeds of Life, plus some California native plant seeds from Wild Ones San Diego. Thank you from Grace’s Book Nook: A heartfelt thank you to all our valued customers and book sale shoppers plus, of course, to our wonderful volunteers who helped make the last weeks of Grace’s Book Nook operations prior to the extended library closure such a success! Customers and volunteers alike will miss what many have told us is their favorite San Diego bookstore but are looking forward to its reopening in a rejuvenated space.
