Arc & Kin brings the java and the warmth
Arc & Kin Specialty Coffee in Scripps Ranch at 10045 Carroll Canyon Road, Suite C, might still seem like a new coffee shop to some, but to the coffee aficionados of Scripps Ranch in the know who enjoy a cup as well as the social aspect of sipping with friends, this place is a warm sanctuary.
Part of the reason coffee enthusiasts hold Arc & Kin in such high regard stems from the owner, Andy Ko. He greets customers with a welcoming smile and his kindness shines through every aspect of this establishment.
“I had managed the shop when it used to be Hunters of Hendricks. When the previous owners decided to close the shop, I was asked where I would go, while simultaneously hearing the community lament the loss of a local coffee shop,” he said. “Quite a few people asked whether I had considered opening a shop myself, and from that, I decided to ask to purchase the equipment and start Arc & Kin.”
The name of the shop pays reverence to the community that makes it successful.
“Because building community is such an important part of my life, I wanted a name that resembles that. Thus, we came up with our mascot, Arc, which is the name of the polar bear. He welcomes his kin (which is the surrounding community of Scripps Ranch) to come enjoy a wonderful cup of coffee or tea and opens its doors for the community to take a break, and savor both the coffee and the connections that are made with both the staff and the people who help it thrive,” Ko said.
“As a coffee shop, we make a wide range of truly traditional fare as well as a set of house specialties,” he explained. “There are six specialties – the Honey Bear, the Baklava, Salted Maple, Cinnamon Spice Mocha, Brown Butterscotch, and the Lavender Dolce – with a few monthly house specialties (available year round, as long as we have the ingredients to make it).”
The monthly specialties include the Peach Cobbler, a peach and brown sugar latte; and the Island White Mocha, coconut based latte drink. Arc & Kin also has tea lemonades now for those who don’t partake in coffee, as well as an assortment of pastries.
“On our menu is always a variety of croissants, scones, Danishes, muffins and cookies,” Ko said. “We also have several gluten free choices and a vegan zucchini walnut loaf available for those with certain dietary restrictions.”
The shop has a generally relaxed atmosphere. There is a large bar table for people to sit at and get work done, as well as several individual tables along a banquette that is good for studying, relaxing and catching up with friends.
“There will soon be a reading nook in the back corner where we will have a space for people to sit and read as well as take and donate books,” Ko said.
Arc & Kin Specialty Coffee is open every day, including holidays, at 7 a.m. It closes at 1 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays, and at noon on Thursdays, and reopens for the Farmer’s Market on Thursdays. Arc & Kin is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
