Club social activities are springing up

Having good times together is the purpose of Welcome Club, and the tradition is blooming.
Starting the month, a celebration of James Taylor’s memorable music was enjoyed at the Scripps Ranch Theatre. It was a sentiment-filled evening with a six-piece band whose performance rivaled the original musicians and singers from the ’70s. Pam Savelberg, the Gadabouts organizer for the Welcome Club, has a long list of events that are planned for the rest of the year. In May, the ladies will be taking in a movie and enjoying lunch after.
At the Welcome Club monthly meeting at the Scripps Ranch Community Center, Program Chair Susan Dunigan welcomed Mary Scafidi of the Kitchens for Good organization. Mary shared how her organization trained more than 700 individuals in culinary and hospitality skills that moved them from joblessness to meaningful employment. Their work builds a better life for themselves and their families while creating a more equitable and just society, Mary noted.
At the social time following the presentation, the club members enjoyed the culinary skills of two of their own members. As usual, their homemade treats and friendly chats were sweet moments for the ladies.
The May meeting of the club on the 11th will feature the installation of newly elected officers who will lead the club for the year.
The club’s monthly Coffee tradition responded to our beautiful spring weather and moved the festivities outdoors to the newly reconstructed Jerabek Park. The fresh air and open space enhanced the enjoyment of both the friendly conversations of the participants and the delicious brunch dishes created by the event’s co-hostesses.
Next month’s Coffee is set for May 8 at the home of a member who has organized a team to make this occasion another favorite time together with friends.
A new Welcome Club event called the Off-the-Ranch-Walk drew members to a tour of the rocky seashore of La Jolla Cove, the Children’s pool and the tidepools. The scenery and exercise
were followed by lunch at a nearby restaurant. The event organizer, Janet Weigel, has another walking event scheduled to tour Balboa Park.
While these highlights of the club’s calendar took place, the regular events of Bunco and card games, crafting, and book reading kept members socially active and enjoying life among friends right here in Scripps Ranch.
