Nothing says California cool like a good pair of sunglasses. Thanks to Calacas Eyewear, you can sport shades that are just as unique as your vibe.

Founder Fernando Espitia and best friend Adrian Mandujano met more than a decade ago at a San Diego farmer’s market. What began as a simple collaboration has grown into a thriving brand known for its handcrafted wooden sunglasses and deep roots in surf, skate and art culture.

“We grew up around surfers and skaters,” Mandujano said. “Eyewear has always been essential here, so we decided to create a line that celebrates that lifestyle – something unique and rooted in where we’re from.”

Each pair of Calacas sunglasses is made from real wood, with lightweight frames engraved by hand. Many of the materials are recycled. Some are even made from old skateboards. The arms are detailed with original designs that reflect sea life, Aztec motifs and spiritual symbolism.

“Our frames are lightweight, comfortable and full of character,” Mandujano said. “People love them because they stand out – and they’re built to last.”

What makes Calacas stand out even more is its approach. Rather than focusing on mass production, the men have kept the business close to the community. You’ll find them at markets like the Scripps Ranch Farmer’s Market on Thursdays.

“We value being part of the community,” Mandujano said. “Selling at farmer’s markets and festivals lets us tell our story directly. That connection is important to us.”

Calacas has developed a loyal following among locals and tourists. Many customers even take their frames to optometrists to fit prescription lenses, turning stylish shades into everyday eyewear.

“Although a lot of our styles reflect beach life, our frames have become a San Diego staple and a favorite gift item for visitors,” Mandujano said.

In addition to sunglasses that are $50, Calacas also crafts wooden notebooks featuring the same etched designs found on its eyewear.

“The notebooks allow us to showcase more artwork,” Mandujano said. “They’re also really popular with kids, who are drawn to the vibrant displays at the markets.”

The notebooks for $20 have taken on a life of their own – used as wedding guest books, Airbnb welcome journals and even customized gifts.

“Some people use them for really special occasions,” he said. “It’s cool to see the different ways people connect with our work.”

While Calacas has a few wholesale partnerships, the men aren’t interested in becoming a massive brand. The goal is to stay grounded, grow intentionally, and possibly open a storefront of their own someday.

“We’re not trying to become a giant brand,” Mandujano said. “We just want to keep doing what we love: making eyewear with meaning.”

Visit Calacas Eyewear at the Scripps Ranch Farmer’s Market, held every Thursday from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 10045 Carroll Canyon Road.
