Club continues volunteer work, autumn activities
By Sue Lloyd
Installation dinner: Our annual Installation dinner was held on Sept. 23 at the Whispering Ridge Clubhouse. The Division Lieutenant Governor, Jan Whitaker, was our guest speaker. We showed our appreciation for the time and effort of those retiring positions and welcomed those entering new roles in the club. All enjoyed a delicious Italian dinner.
Your Safe Place Halloween Party: Club members supported Your Safe Place (YSP) by volunteering at their annual Halloween party on Oct. 3. Members helped distribute costumes to kids. There was trick or treating, games, snacks and an art project. YSP is an organization that helps families dealing with domestic violence. Our club has helped them by volunteering for events and giving donations.
Farmer’s Market: The Kiwanis Club has had a booth at the Scripps Ranch Farmer’s Market every other Thursday throughout the summer and into the fall. We’ve given away hundreds of free books to adults and children – helping promote one of our club’s core values of literacy. We, of course, have enjoyed supporting the market by purchasing from the vendors and meeting neighbors.
Key Club: The Mira Mesa High School Key Club is earning community service hours by making Thanksgiving themed table decorations for a local retirement home. Scripps Ranch Kiwanis sponsors and mentors both the Mira Mesa High and Scripps Ranch High Key Clubs.
Volunteering at S.T.E.P.: The club volunteered for a second time at Support The Enlisted Project (S.T.E.P.) on two dates in September, the 17th and the 22nd. We helped pack and organize donations at the San Diego warehouse in Scripps Ranch. We organized 61 bins of mostly clothing for military families on the 22nd. S.T.E.P. distributes clothing, food and supplies to enlisted military families.
Join us: The Scripps Ranch Kiwanis Club meets from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at Whispering Ridge Clubhouse located at 12465 Oakfort Court.
