Great fundraiser; and Student of the Month awards
By Sue Lloyd
Harvest & Holly Market
On Saturday, Oct. 25, our club held the third annual Harvest & Holly Craft Market & Bake Sale fundraiser at Ellen Browning Scripps Elementary School. Forty-four craft vendors sold a wide array of handcrafted items. An incredibly talented group of local artists sold pottery, jewelry, garden decor, clothing, purses, home and holiday decor, artwork, woodwork, homemade stationary and giftable food items. There was something for every taste and budget. This year, the addition of two food vendors and a coffee cart went over well.
Proceeds that Kiwanis Club makes on this event go to donations to the charities we have chosen that help children throughout San Diego County. We intend to continue this Scripps Ranch fundraiser year after year. We invite the community to join us next year for this pre-holiday fundraising tradition!
Student of the Month
As school is back in full swing, our club looks forward to honoring a fifth grade student each month from our local elementary schools.
Liam L. from Jerabek Elementary School received the award for September. Saisha J. from Dingeman Elementary School was honored for the month of October.
The students are nominated by their fifth grade teachers. Grades are not a factor considered to be nominated for the award. The teachers look for qualities in the students that will make them successful in school and successful members of society: qualities like enthusiasm, helping others, good attitude, doing things when not asked. Teachers are very enthusiastic in their choices and present the student, and why they were chosen to the club. We’ve seen some really amazing young people receive this award over the years. They all have uniquely different qualities from various backgrounds, and have different talents. In addition to the award and plaque, the kids receive a gift certificate from Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza.
The Kiwanis Club of Scripps Ranch is a volunteer organization supporting kids and our community. We meet at 5:30 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at the Whispering Ridge Clubhouse, 12465 Oakfort Court.
