It’s all about family and community

For more than 55 years, Devin Jacanin and his family have called Scripps Ranch their home.

The family wanted to share the positive impact the community has had on their lives.

“It all started with my mom, Sue Gerhardt. She moved to Scripps Ranch in the ’70s, when I was just about four years old,” said Beth Corso, Devin’s mother. “Back then, Scripps Ranch was a very small town. There was only Ironwood Road and a few other streets. The community was mostly military families, with husbands coming back from Vietnam.”

Sue Gerhardt was heavily involved in the community and made an impact.

“I remember when I was growing up, we used to have block parties that she would be involved in hosting. It was never really just the block, it was always the whole community,” Corso said. “She was also always volunteering in the community. She was a part of a group of ladies in Scripps who would help out with events at the Children’s Hospital, and much more.”

Jacanin shared more about his grandmother’s involvement in the community.

“She was a real estate agent. She sold many homes to the families that were coming into Scripps Ranch in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s,” he said. “My grandma’s house served as the judges  (base) for the 4th of July parade for around 30 years.”

Unfortunately, Gerhardt passed away earlier this year.

“She is the reason all of my family is here. We wanted to honor her by having our lineage out there,” Devin said.

Jacanin grew up in Scripps Ranch but moved away for a few years. He moved back to Scripps Ranch last year.

“My wife and I recently got married, and I could not think of a better place to start a family. This is such a safe, welcoming and supportive community,” he said. “There is so much to do here, whether it is going to the 4th of July parade, or the concerts in the park during the summer.”

With three generations of family in the community, he is happy to be back home.

“This fall, my wife and I opened Halo and Hive Salon on Mercy Road. We are both in the hair industry. She is a cosmetologist, and I am a barber,” Jacanin said. “We wanted to open our salon near Scripps Ranch with the intention of giving back to this warm and loving community.”

“We cannot think of a better place to live. We love it here,” Jacanin and Corso said.
