Jerabek Park upgrades celebrated
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria was among the dignitaries recently celebrating improvements to Jerabek Park, a project totaling $7.9 million. This project provides for replacement of the children’s play area, comfort station and concession stand, flagpole, fitness equipment, picnic shelter and security lighting. It also provides Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) path of travel improvements to meet current ADA requirements.
Mayor Gloria and members of the Scripps Ranch community unveiled the major park upgrades to Jerabek Park, including new playgrounds and modern facilities for park visitors, plus a resurfaced parking lot.
These improvements were funded through a combination of state and local funds, including a dedication of $4 million from Assemblymember Brian Maienschein.
“Every neighborhood deserves great parks and public spaces where families can come together and enjoy the outdoors,” Mayor Gloria said. “For Scripps Ranch, these long-awaited improvements mean a safer, more vibrant space that promotes health, connection and quality of life for everyone who calls this neighborhood home.”
Work began more than two years ago, in September 2023, with the initial expectation that construction would take approximately one year. However, delays due to weather conditions and equipment procurement challenges extended the construction timeline.
Design and construction of Jerabek Park was managed by the City’s Engineering and Capital Projects Department at the cost of $7.9 million, funding that was allocated in previous fiscal year budgets, including the $4 million in state funding.
Jerabek Park, located just up the street from Jerabek Elementary School, was originally built in 1984 and included an amphitheater and concession building. A decade later, a children’s playground was added to the park. However, since 1994, the park had not received any significant renovations.
