The recent Santa Ana wind event in Southern California impacted millions of residents across Los Angeles and San Diego. Thanks to the dedication and quick response of San Diego Fire-Rescue and Cal Fire, the effects of several wildfires in our area were minimized. Their hard work prevented the kind of devastation seen in Los Angeles County, and for that, we are incredibly grateful.

We also want to recognize the residents of  Scripps Ranch for your efforts in wildfire prevention. However, there’s always more we can do as a community. The Scripps Ranch Fire Safe Council is here to help you stay prepared and protect your home.

How you can stay fire safe

First, get your free evacuation plan.Be prepared before an emergency strikes. Contact the Scripps Ranch Fire Safe Council for a customized evacuation plan. Email: srfiresafecouncil@gmail.com. Phone (858 ) 201-3711.

Second, create defensible space around your home. Defensible space acts as a protective barrier, slowing or stopping the spread of wildfire while providing a safer environment for firefighters. Take these steps: Work with your neighbors to clear brush and maintain fire-resistant landscaping. Request a free defensible space inspection from Cal Fire: fire.ca.gov/dspace.

Third, practice fire-safe habits. Properly dispose of smoking materials. Maintain vehicles to prevent sparks from exhaust. Mow before 10 a.m. and never on hot or windy days. Use string trimmers instead of lawnmowers to clear dry vegetation.
