Local SIR group grows
The newly formed Scripps Ranch chapter of Sons in Retirement and Semi-Retirement (SIR) has seen impressive growth since its first gathering just three months ago. What began as a small meeting of 20 men has quickly expanded to 40 members, reflecting strong interest from local retirees and semi-retirees looking for social connection and activities.
During its short time in existence, the group has already organized several interest groups and established a regular monthly lunch meeting. Members currently meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month at Filippi’s Pizza on Mira Mesa Boulevard, where they gather for food, conversation and updates on upcoming activities.
Several activity groups have already taken shape. A bowling group held its first event on March 20, and a weekly hiking group is now up and running. A golf group is also in the planning stages as organizers coordinate schedules and locations.
In addition to regular activities, the group is planning a number of future day trips. Proposed tours include visits to the Amazon warehouse in San Ysidro, the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, and the Taylor Guitar factory. Organizers say additional tours and activity groups are also being explored.
Other interest groups are beginning to form as well, including a card group and a wine tasting group designed for couples.
SIR emphasizes flexibility and participation without pressure. There is no mandatory attendance for meetings or activities. Members are encouraged to take part in whichever groups interest them and attend as many – or as few – events as they wish. The overall goal of the organization is to provide a welcoming environment where men can socialize, make new friends and enjoy shared interests.
The group is also open to starting additional activity groups based on members’ ideas and interests.
