Roustabouts bring irreverent comedy
The Roustabouts Theatre Company announced its production of the insightful comedy “An Act of God” by David Javerbaum, running March 7-29 at Scripps Ranch Theatre.
The production is directed by artistic director and founding partner of The Roustabouts Theatre Co., Phil Johnson, and stars celebrated local actors Sam Ginn as God, with Devyn Wade as Archangel Michael and Fred Harlow as Archangel Gabriel. This also marks the first production in which “Young Roustabouts” youth performers will act as understudies for the show and have small walk-on roles.
Witty, cheeky and unexpectedly profound, “An Act of God” flips faith, power and humanity upside down through razor-sharp humor. God descends to Earth with two long-suffering angels to “set the record straight,” and sacred truths collide with modern skepticism, politics and pop culture. The result is a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud exploration of belief, free will and the flawed brilliance of being human.
“David Javerbaum has such a sharp and insightful comedic voice,” said director Phil Johnson. “‘An Act of God’ gives audiences permission to laugh while also considering some big, relatable questions about faith and humanity. It’s bold, it’s smart and it’s a joy to bring it to life with this cast.”
“An Act of God” was written by author and satirist Javerbaum, a 13-time Emmy Award winner whose credits include head writer and executive producer of “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart. “An Act of God” premiered on Broadway in 2015 with Jim Parsons of “Big Bang Theory” fame in the lead role.
“An Act of God” runs March 7-29 in the Scripps Ranch Theatre space, 9783 Avenue of Nations. The play runs Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m.
