Scripps Ranch Theatre announces new season
Scripps Ranch Theatre revealed the performance schedule for its 47th season. Productions will run from August 2026 through May 2027. This season, Jill Drexler, artistic director of Scripps Ranch Theatre, celebrates her 25th year helming the organization. “We are looking forward to sharing a lot of laughter in our 47th season. As I enter my 25th year as artistic director of Scripps Ranch Theatre, I am so grateful for the support of our long time theatre goers and supporters,” Drexler said. “Our patrons have told us how important comedy is to them – and we listened. There is so much going on in the world that is stressful and difficult. We want to provide an outlet to unwind together. Connecting to stories filled with humor and joy always helps, and we can’t wait to laugh with our community.”
SHOW #1: ‘Theatre People or the Angel Next Door’
By Paul Slade Smith
Directed by Christopher Williams
Aug. 27-Sept. 20, 2026
In this zany comedy, Oliver Adams is on the brink of a major success. His novel “The Angel Next Door” is set to be published, and famed Broadway playwrights Charlotte and Arthur Sanders have already adapted his book for what is sure to be a huge stage hit. And who do they have their eye on as the eading lady? Margot Bell, of course, the very person Oliver adores and about whom he has written his novel (though he hasn’t told her yet).
When they all converge for a weekend in Newport, Rhode Island, the thin walls of the well-appointed mansion reveal that the angel may not be angelic, and only the power of theatre can save the play, Oliver’s novel, and perhaps most importantly, his heart.
SHOW #2: To be determined
Jan. 21-Feb. 13, 2027
This show is lined up to kick off 2027, but the announcement is on hold as rights are still pending.
SHOW #3: ‘4000 MILES’
By Amy Herzog
Directed by Ted Leib
March 4-27, 2027
“4000 Miles” by Amy Herzog is a 2013 Pulitzer Prize-finalist drama exploring generational bonds. It follows young Leo, who unexpectedly crashes at his feisty, 91-year-old grandmother Vera’s Greenwich Village apartment after a traumatic cross-country bike trip. These two unlikely roommates infuriate and bewilder one another, but will they ultimately reach each other? Authentic and moving without a shred of sentimentality, 4000 Miles shows us how two outsiders can find their way in this challenging
world.
SHOW #4: ‘Private Lives’
By Noël Coward
Co-production with The Roustabouts Theatre Co.
Directed by Phil Johnson
April 22-May 16, 2027
“Private Lives” by Noël Coward is considered one of the most sophisticated, entertaining plays ever written. Elyot and Amanda, tempestuously married, divorced and now honeymooning with new spouses at the same hotel, meet by chance, reignite the old spark and impulsively elope. Soon the fierce love that first brought them together has rekindled. They abscond together, leaving their new spouses behind and initiating a dangerous dance of desire – and violence. Written by Coward in 1930 for his friend Gertrude Lawrence and instantly a stylish West End, Broadway and literary classic, the play has featured the biggest stars in entertainment: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Alan Rickman, Tallulah Bankhead and Maggie Smith. Bad behavior and martinis abound for two people, very much in love, but unable to stand each other. Often it is said that love and hate are very close, but can lovers be honest enough to admit they might be better off apart? Scripps Ranch Theatre produces a mainstage season in its intimate 118 seat space on the campus of Alliant International University, 9783 Avenue of Nations.
