SRHS track and field team wraps up a great season
By Hector Trujillo
The Scripps Ranch High School track and field team had another impressive season with great performances from both the mens and womens sides. The 2025 season concludes on May 31 at the 105th CIF State Championships.
Among the most noteworthy accomplishments were those from the 4x800m relay teams which ended ranked number 1 in all of San Diego County.
“Our expectation is for them to go to the state championships,” said SRHS head track and field coach Kadrina Coffee. “We did rather well for the season. We didn’t have such a strong sprints team, but that comes and goes. Everyone is doing much better overall.”
The season started on Feb. 27 at Scripps Ranch High School before moving to the Elmer Runge Invite on March 1 at Patrick Henry High School. The Falcons took part in two more meets on March 8 and March 15 before getting a chance to host again on March 20.
“This year’s team was a lot better because they progressed, which is to be expected,” Coffee said. “Each year our expectations are for them to get faster. The key is to do the right training, the right nutrition, and get the right amount of sleep. If they aren’t getting better, we as coaches, have to figure out what is going on.”
Scripps Ranch High also impressed at the Western League finals on May 9 at University City High, which came a week after the Junior Varsity City Conference Championships and two weeks after the Dick Wilkins Frosh/Soph Championships at Del Norte High School.
Among the standouts at Western League were senior Nathan Bamford who was the defending champion in the 1600m along with several others who moved on to the first-round of CIF Division II championships held on May 17.
The mens side had a total of 15 qualify, while the women saw 13 make it in. Junior Nicholas Cheng qualified in three events, which were the 400m, 4x400m relay and 4x100m relay. Teammates Nico Cruz, Devin Gum and Markell Martin made two events each.
On the womens side, junior Jada Kim made it in for the 800m, 1600m and 4x400m relay. Sophomore Tegan Koranda competed in the 800m, 4x400m and 4x800m relays. The CIF Division II championships were also held at University City High while the CIF State Track and Field Championships will take place on May 30-31 at Veterans Memorial Stadium at Buchanan High School in Clovis.
