The Scripps Ranch High School wrestling program concluded the season with strong competitive results, increased participation, and continued momentum across both the boys’ and girls’ teams.

Expanded rosters contributed to greater depth at the varsity and junior varsity levels, while the girls’ program continued its steady rise. The growth has brought renewed energy to the program, along with practical challenges, including limited practice space as more athletes participate in daily training.

“Our numbers continue to grow every year, which speaks to the interest and commitment we’re seeing,” said Justin Viramontes, head coach of Scripps Ranch High wrestling. “Our focus is on developing wrestlers at every level while maintaining a safe and supportive environment.”

Boys varsity anchors success

The boys varsity team finished the season with more than 210 match wins and 134 pins, reflecting consistent performance throughout the lineup. Top contributors included seniors David Henderson, Matthew Tung, Elisha Hosseini and Micah Kollmeyer, along with freshman Ross Hosseini.

Capping the season, David Henderson earned a berth at the CIF State Championships, a milestone achievement that underscored his individual success and the continued progress of the Scripps Ranch High wrestling program.

Tung competed in the most matches on the team, finishing the regular season with 34 wins and leading the squad with 75 takedowns.

Midseason injuries to several varsity wrestlers required lineup adjustments and provided opportunities for younger athletes to gain valuable varsity experience.

Girls post impressive results

The girls wrestling team continued to show steady progress, finishing the season with more than 180 match wins and 147 pins. Senior Khyla Adams and sophomores Soren Mendoza and Malia Kollmeyer led the team in victories, with Kollmeyer posting the highest total at 31-6. Adams and Kollmeyer also finished the season as league champions.

Several first year wrestlers made immediate contributions. Freshman Sophie Geller finished the season with 25 wins, while junior Jayda Nicholson earned 21 wins in her first year with the program. Adams, Mendoza, Kollmeyer, Nicholson, Geller and senior Marian Meriga all qualified for the CIF Masters Championships.

“I joined as a junior not knowing what to expect,” Nicholson said. “The team was welcoming, and wrestling challenged me both physically and mentally. It’s been a great experience.”

JV delivers strong season

The boys junior varsity team completed the regular season with 110 wins, led by freshman Salmin Tritchler and sophomore Killian Wenker. Freshman Jonathan Nguyen also qualified as a Masters alternate, underscoring the program’s growing depth.

Looking ahead

With continued participation and solid performances across all levels, Scripps Ranch wrestling is positioned to build on this season’s success. As the team transitions into freestyle season, the wrestling room will remain open to returning athletes and students interested in learning the sport.

A growing middle school program is also underway, helping introduce younger students to wrestling and strengthening the pipeline as interest continues to increase throughout the community.

As participation expands, addressing facility space needs will be an important next step. The season will be remembered not only for its competitive results, but also for the steady growth and commitment that continue to shape Scripps Ranch High wrestling.
