Semiannual Mega Book Sale: the biggest ever? It happens only twice a year – and with the impending multi-month library closure for construction, this will be the last such sale for a long time! Don’t miss the eagerly anticipated semiannual book sale on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at our library. The sale will feature a huge inventory of books for readers of all ages and tastes – from board books and picture books for tots, “chapter books” and easy readers for kids, and great books for teens to a wide range of fiction and nonfiction for adults, media, and more – all at amazing low prices. Save even more by choosing to fill the popular “Big Yellow Bag” for a single low price! For the first time ever, yellow bag customers will have the opportunity to return during the weeks following the sale and refill their yellow bag for the same low price as we work to reduce inventory in advance of the prolonged  library closure. Be sure to take the opportunity to browse the collection of antiquarian, rare, out-of-print books and collectors’ editions, which can make wonderful gifts for the discerning book lover (or treat yourself) – at a fraction of the online price! All proceeds support our library’s new book acquisitions and programs for all ages.

Where’s Odi? – There’s just one week left to find “Odi the Coyote,” at the Scripps Ranch Library and receive a cool Odi button. Designed by 9 year-old Aubrey Dreison, this year’s special Odi button features Odi (the San Diego Public Library mascot) posing in front of iconic Evans Pond along with a resident frog plus a duck holding a bag of duck food from Grace’s Book Nook (the used bookstore in our library). If you hurry, through July 31 you can seek Odi at any or all of the 36 other San Diego Public Library branches, collect additional buttons, and qualify for prizes! Just talk to a staff member to get started.

It’s not too late for summer reading fun! – It’s not too late to sign up to participate in the popular Summer Reading Program, which continues through Aug. 31! This year’s “Level Up at Your Library” game-themed program invites readers (and gamers) of all ages – kids, teens and adults – to register at sandiego.beanstack.org/reader365 and start reading, gaming and earning points that can be redeemed for prizes. Rediscover the joy of gaming in all its forms, from board games and video games to outdoor activities and “gamified” reading adventures.

In addition to encouraging everyone to read, the Summer Reading Program features many free entertaining, educational and engaging special programs at the Scripps Miramar Ranch Library for kids and teens, sponsored by the Scripps Ranch Friends of the Library. To register online, view a list of activities and books, or to find a Summer Reading Program event, visit sandiego.gov/summerreading
