The inFURmary: San Diego’s First Veterinary Pain Management Center
Opening in Scripps Ranch this May, The inFURmary is bringing something unique to San Diego: a family-owned veterinary hospital with a dedicated focus on pain management and mobility care, combined with a full general practice and comprehensive specialty services – all under one roof.
The founder, Dr. Jacqueline Johnson, a triple-boarded specialist in canine/feline practice, canine rehabilitation and veterinary pain management, wants to change the narrative on pain.
“Most people think of arthritis as an old dog problem,” says Dr. Johnson. “But in reality, 4 out of 10 dogs have visible arthritis on x-rays before the age of 4. And 70 percent of owners don’t recognize the signs of pain in younger dogs. Our goal is to change how and when we intervene – the earlier we act, the better we can protect a pet’s quality of life.”
The inFURmary will offer innovative treatments for arthritis, including the first hospital south of Orange County to offer SynovetinOA™, a cutting-edge radiotherapeutic treatment that directly targets inflammation within the joints, providing pain relief for up to 12 months with a single treatment. The practice will also offer solutions for post-surgical pain, cancer pain, and neuropathic conditions.
Beyond pain care, The inFURmary offers a full-service general practice, and has teamed with a number of specialists to treat patients on-site.
“We call it our Collaborative Care Model,” says Dr. Johnson. “We believe the best pet care happens when we can work directly with the owner AND the specialist. So, we made some calls. Now we have specialists in orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, internal medicine, cardiology, oncology, and radiology who can help treat our patients right here, in our hospital.”
