Welcome Club focuses on nurturing camaraderie
By Denise Stewart
Scripps Ranch has grown significantly in population since its founding as a suburban outpost in the late 1960s. What started out as a cluster of model homes under the eucalyptus trees just beyond, what was then, the Navy air base has grown into a thriving community with a hometown vibe.
It all happened because those families who settled here over the years joined together to make what Scripps Ranch is today. And that tradition of coming together is still dominant in the Scripps Ranch Welcome Club.
February’s monthly meeting at the Scripps Ranch Community Center on Cypress Canyon Drive focused on strategies for taking care of ourselves and one another. A program presented by Carrie McClellan, director of outreach and community engagement at Elder-Help, informed the members of how to empower themselves to live independently and take advantage of the supportive programs the organization offers. She also made the audience aware of the ways they could get more involved with helping others in our community.
The month started off with an evening of dining and entertainment. Members gathered for a potluck supper. From there they went to the Alliant University campus to enjoy a Scripps Ranch Theatre performance of “Donna Orbits the Moon.” Potlucks and plays are a regular and festive part of the club’s evening calendar.
The regularly occurring daytime activities engaged the members for the rest of the month with games, crafts and book discussions. The highlight was a Gadabout trip to the Safari Park to enjoy the exotic animals that inhabit the scenic landscape. Pam Savelsberg, Gadabout chair, has a list of special outings the club will be enjoying this spring.
The upcoming March 9 monthly meeting at 7 in the evening at the Community Center will also have a program organized by Susan Dunigan, program chair. It would be an opportunity for anyone who is interested in learning more about the club, its members and activities, and an excellent chance to get acquainted with the ladies. A visit to the website scrippsranchwelcomeclub.com would also be a helpful start to becoming part of the friendly group.
