Welcome Club in action: connection, community, caring

By Sue Lloyd

When it all started more than 45 years ago with a small, young group of new home buyers in Scripps Ranch, Welcome Club was dedicated to making one another feel at home and appreciated as a valued part of the growing community. While those long-time members have raised their families, retired from their careers and welcomed the next generation of neighbors, they still recognize the need to support one another. They still enjoy the sense of community here and thrive in its benefits. They still reach out to newcomers to be part of what makes Scripps Ranch such a comfortable place to live.

The Welcome Club’s March 9 meeting at the Community Center featured the usual social time along with the splendid pastries created by Cecilia Waters and Michelle Cyphers. After the opportunity to mingle and chat, the meeting’s program organized by Susan Dunigan began.

Tom and Laurie Dunkerton of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, known as You Are Not Alone (YANA), gave a presentation on how seniors in our community can be involved in looking after their neighbors to ensure their well-being, comfort and security.

One aspect of building relationships is the sharing of good times. Welcome Club is experienced and dedicated to doing that. The club’s March calendar has 12 social events scheduled for the month. The smaller group and regular events include games, Bunco, book discussions, and crafting.

The highlights of the month are a Gadabout event to take a tour of Stone Brewing’s facility in San Marcos. Along with the tour and tasting, the group will enjoy lunch at the brewery’s restaurant. Pam Savelsberg has been the coordinator of this group for several years.

A second highlight event is at the home of Diane Rider on March 25. It will be morning Coffee and Brunch to celebrate National Waffle Day. Club members gather for these occasions on a regular basis to enjoy the closeness of friends and to share good times.

Welcome Club has a website that is helpful in connecting with members who will be delighted to provide you with more information regarding the group: Scrippsranchwelcomeclub.com.
