Womens basketball team enters home stretch

The Scripps Ranch High School (SRHS) womens varsity basketball team looks to close out its final six games of the regular season strong in hopes of making another run in the post-season.
SRHS started off the season playing well by winning four of its first five games which included a 61-14 blowout over Mission Bay High on Dec. 14, along with a 57-30 drubbing of Bonita Vista High on Dec. 21 in tournament play to finish second overall. The only defeat during that span came on Dec. 11 in a 65-46 loss to Lincoln High.
“I feel that we’re going to have a decent run for the rest of the year,” said head coach James Stewart III.
The Lady Falcons team, which finished ranked in the top-10 in San Diego last year, has four returners along with two freshmen, while the other players are junior varsity players from the previous season.
“It’s been a good season so far,” Stewart said. “It’s a very interesting team and, although the process has been a slow one, it’s been a fun one.”
Senior point guard Ree Ree Davis and junior forward Clare Valentine have been among the standout performers so far by helping to provide poise and stability for the rest of the team.
“The varsity game is a lot faster, so there’s a lot more preparation with regards to opponents and getting more information by watching film,” Stewart said. “Western League in general is pretty tough. We’ll see how it goes but I’m pretty optimistic.”
Of the six remaining games, the three that will be at home take place on Jan. 31 versus Mira Mesa High, Feb. 1 against Mt. Carmel High and the regular season finale on Feb. 13 in a rematch versus Morse High.
Of the three remaining road games, the one that is circled on the calendar is a rematch versus Cathedral Catholic High School on Feb. 11. Scripps Ranch High has also competed in two other tournaments which were the So Cal Holiday Prep Classic where the Lady Falcons went 2-1; and another in which they finished with a 65-42 victory over Hesperia on Jan. 4.
