Friends of the Library Week
The week of Oct. 18-24 is 2026 National Friends of the Library Week! And, in a joyful coincidence, Scripps Ranch Friends of the Library (SRFOL) will turn 40 years old this month as well! Over the past four decades, SRFOL has raised literally hundreds of thousands of dollars, and SRFOL volunteers have donated tens of thousands of hours to support the Scripps Miramar Ranch Library! How about celebrating your appreciation for the library and SRFOL by becoming a Friends member or renewing your membership now? New and renewed memberships are effective through December 2027. Visit srfol.org/join.htm to join or for more information including benefits of membership. Individual annual memberships and lifetime memberships are affordable and tax-deductible.
Although one of the perks of SRFOL membership is the included subscription to the Folio, SRFOL’s e-newsletter, non-members are invited to stay informed about the latest library information by subscribing separately. Simply email president@srfol.org and the Folio will be delivered to your inbox every other month during the time the library is closed. Or alternatively, check SRFOL’s website www.srfol.org for library news and status updates as reopening nears.
Library construction and closure update
Progress reports continue to be encouraging, at least partially. The roof replacement has been completed, and the HVAC system replacement work is expected to be finalized in October. We have been assured that some welcome refreshes to the library’s interior, including new paint, will also take place before the library reopens. This may possibly occur sooner than the original upcoming winter estimate. Unfortunately, continued parking challenges can be expected, as completion of the parking lot
expansion project is currently projected for summer 2027.
Accessing library services during the closure
While the library is closed, books and other materials can be returned to the Mira Mesa Branch Library or to any library in the San Diego Public Library (SDPL) system. Books can be placed on hold at the branch library of your choice.
Seeds available for fall planting
The Scripps Ranch Seed Library has been relocated for the duration of the library’s closure. The Seed Library has a large selection of seeds including flowers, herbs, and vegetables available without charge. Visit srfol.org/seed-library.htm. Seeds can be requested by emailing seedlibrary@srfol.org and will be prepared for contactless pick-up from a centrally located Scripps Ranch location.
Book donation options
During the time the library and Grace’s Book Nook (the Friends-run used bookstore) are closed, we are unable to accept donations of books. If you can wait until our library reopens, which will hopefully be not too much longer, to donate your gently used books and media, it would be very much appreciated. That way we can help your books find new homes, and you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that you’re supporting our library! But if that’s not possible, you can find information on alternate donation options that also support our libraries at srfol.org/gbn-donate.htm. Please do not leave books outside the library as they will end up in the landfill.
