Library concert: Trio Arpavioluta
The “Pleasure of Your Company” music series, sponsored by the Scripps Ranch Friends of the Library, presents the Trio Arpavioluta on Sunday, April 8, at 2:30 p.m. in the informal and intimate setting of the Scripps Miramar Ranch Library Center.
Comprised of flutist Cathy Blickenstaff, harpist Laura Vaughan and violinist/violist Päivikki Nykter, the trio will present a program featuring works by Jean-Marie Leclair, Théodore Dubois, César Cui, Daniel Dorff and Claude Debussy.
A versatile recitalist and chamber musician, violinist/violist Päivikki Nykter is equally at home with standard repertoire as well as contemporary music. She has maintained her passion for new music, premiering numerous works written for her, and has worked with a number of notable contemporary composers. A native of Finland, she is a graduate of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki.
Nykter served as an artist-in-residence at the University of California, San Diego Music Department from 1994 to 2006. She is now a freelance violinist maintaining a busy concert and teaching schedule both in the U.S. and Europe. She has recorded on a number of labels.
Cathy Blickenstaff holds a master’s degree in Flute Performance from the University of Colorado where she studied with Maralyn Prestia. She has been a participant in the Aspen Music Festival and has studied with several world-renowned flutists.
Blickenstaff has concertized throughout California and Colorado. An active freelancer, she can be heard on two CDs by Vail recording artists.
Blickenstaff was the flute professor at Point Loma Nazarene University for nine years, has performed with local orchestras and is currently a member of the chamber music ensembles WW5 and Flûtes de Salon, in addition to Trio Arpavioluta.
Born into a family of musicians and composers, Laura Vaughan began her study of music on the piano at the age of five, excelled on the harp at an early age and has been performing as a professional harpist since age 13. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Harp Performance from the University of Oregon School of Music.
Vaughan has collaborated with the San Diego Symphony, San Diego Opera, Starlight Musical Theater, San Diego Comic Opera, La Jolla Symphony and Baja California Orchestra. She has performed extensively throughout southern California and in Mexico and Austria.
