SCRIPPS RANCH WEEKEND
MCAS Miramar Air Show
The entire San Diego community is invited to the 2017 Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar Air Show, Sept. 22-24. The theme of this year’s air show is “A Salute to Vietnam Veterans.”
“The 2017 MCAS Miramar air show gives the public and current service members an opportunity to say thank you to the veterans of the Vietnam War,” said Col. Jason Woodworth, commanding officer of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. “Our goal is to remind the veterans that the country cares about them and truly values the sacrifice they made for the American people, regardless of how they were treated when they originally returned from Vietnam.”
The air show is free to the public, however, upgraded seating options are on sale now. For ticket information and up-to-date air show information, visit miramarairshow.com or call 1-877-772-5425 for assistance or questions regarding air show preferred seating tickets.
Interestingly enough, the Scripps Ranch Next Door social media network is currently conducting a Scripps Ranch community poll: MCAS Miramar Air Show Debate — I support the Miramar Air Show or I do not support the Miramar Air Show. One argument supporting the air show is that it’s great to show the public the air superiority to make them feel at ease that the military is here to protect and defend the people of the United States. An argument against the show is that the funds could be better spent helping wounded vets. In addition, some residents don’t like the noise or the additional traffic. Gypsy Swing Cats at Sanctuary Lounge
Sanctuary Lounge presents the sounds of the Gypsy Swing Cats for a live performance from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22.
The San Diego-based Gypsy Swing Cats perform an energetic, innovative blend of swing, jazz and blues. This is a group of three San Diego jazz artists. Their music merges Gypsy melodies and rhythms with the influences of American jazz reminiscent of Paris in the 1930s: cool, charming and classy.
Gypsy Jazz, also known as Gypsy Swing, is a musical expression often said to have been started by guitarist Jean “Django” Reinhardt. He was foremost amongst a group of Gypsy guitarists working in and around Paris in the 1930s. The music combined the exciting sound of American jazz that transformed the old into the new. The guitarists supercharged the music further by adding swing to the fire and melancholia of the unique Gypsy sound.
The Gypsy Swing Cats will be followed by DJ Gavin spinning tunes until 2 a.m.
On Saturday, Sept. 23, get ready for DJ Smooth to do his thing from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Sanctuary Lounge is located at 12090 Scripps Summit Drive, off Scripps Poway Parkway. Visit sanctuaryloungesd.com.

Students sell cards to benefit disaster victims
Art students from Laura McDonald’s art classes at Marshall Middle School will sell their hand-made greeting cards this weekend at the Starbucks, located at 10000 Aviary Drive, to benefit victims of the recent hurricanes that struck portions of the United States.
The students will sell their cards on Friday, Sept. 22 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 23 from 9 a.m. to noon, and Sunday, Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to noon.
McDonald’s art students were discussing the recent disasters in class and, feeling that they would like to take action to help, decided to sell their creative greeting cards as a way to raise funds for the recovery efforts. The students came up with the idea, the marketing plans and took initiative to contact Starbucks all on their own, according to McDonald.
