Customers entering Pastel Bakery have no doubt they are deep into the holiday season as they sense the delightful aroma of fresh bakery items and spot festive cookies in the display cases.

Pastel Bakery owner Joann Leo has personally planned a delectable menu of sweet holiday treats for customers. A colorful selection of holiday cookies tops the selection of tasty delights. Some of these include rolled cookies, chocolate sprinkles and fruitcake cookies.

Pastel Bakery offers a variety of fresh-baked cakes, cake by the slice, cookies, pastries, custom cakes and bread loaves.

Dessert specialties this week are highlighted by yule logs with swirls of bittersweet chocolate mousse filling for $30. But the selection does not stop there.

“We have some holiday cakes and also fruit tarts for the holidays,” Leo said.

Topping the list of cakes is a 6-inch chocolate peppermint mocha cake that sells for $35.

These are not simple cakes, and Pastel Bakery does not skimp on the ingredients. For example, the bakery’s ingredients for cupcakes include either butter cream, cream cheese icing or chocolate ganache. Leo believes in cooking with only the finest whole ingredients, which she purchases fresh from local vendors as much as possible. Her strawberries come from Carlsbad and Ramona. She gets her eggs from Ramona and her dairy products come from within the state.

Besides fresh-baked cakes, cake by the slice and cookies, Pastel Bakery offers pastries, custom cakes and bread loaves. It also carries sandwiches and salads.

The bakery takes orders for catering, birthday parties or weddings. The custom cakes are a specialty.  One cake from Pastel Bakery, a three-layer masterpiece, was featured prominently in an episode of “My Super Sweet Sixteen” on MTV last summer.

In addition, Pastel Bakery was rated highly by the Zagat guide, was featured in Modern Luxury Magazine and was voted one of the top 5 San Diego bakeries on the San Diego A List.

Leo and her family are longtime Scripps Ranch residents, and her two children attend schools in Scripps Ranch.

This boutique bakery is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. It will be open with special holiday hours on both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve for last minute shoppers from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both of these Sundays. Pastel Bakery will be closed Dec. 25 to 27 to give its employees some holiday time off, but will resume normal hours on Dec. 28.
