Try a selection of exotic flavors

Visitors to the Scripps Ranch Farmer’s Market have an opportunity to sample a wide variety of flavors from the Masala Cottage booth.

Masala Cottage offers a huge selection of samosas, triangular-shaped Indian appetizers.

“They are handmade pastries with curry inside,” explained Charlie Proana who was serving the delectable sensations from the booth.

The Masala Cottage Indian food business produces so many varieties of samosas overall that it is attempting to set an official Guinness World Record. Three weeks ago, the Masala Cottage booth brought nine of these from its enormous selection for customers at the local Farmer’s Market.

“We have the largest variety of samosas, and we have varieties of different curries inside of our samosas,” Proana said.

The selection a few weeks ago included vegan, vegetarian, ground lamb and lamb eggplant.

An array of steaming trays held all kinds of samosas, curries and side dishes at the booth. There was a huge amount of combinations from which to choose. A selection of sauces can be added to items that cost more than $6; and for an additional dollar for dishes below $6. The booth also had chili chicken. It had chicken tikka, chunks of roasted chicken in curry sauce; and it had parotta breads, layered flat bread.

“All of my breads are vegan,” Proana said.

Masala Cottage is a business that prepares its Indian food at a commercial kitchen and offers it only at farmer’s markets. It’s been at the Scripps Ranch Farmer’s Market for only a few weeks now, but with the addition of Scripps Ranch, Masala Cottage now serves its food at 14 different locations. The business has been in existence for nine years.

“Come on down, give it a try and don’t be shy,” Proana said.

The Scripps Ranch Farmer’s Market is open for shoppers from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. every single Saturday at 10380 Spring Canyon Road, in the Innovations Academy parking lot. Visit srfm.org.
