Local favorite returns to Hoyt Park

The Heroes will return to the Scripps Ranch Symphony in the Park free summer concert series in Hoyt Park on Aug. 10.

“We have been playing every year at the park since around 1985. This is one of our most important shows of the entire year. We work really hard to make sure this show is perfect,” said band leader and drummer Tommy Boyd.

The band performs a diverse range of music.

“We play nearly everything except opera. We play music through the decades as well as current music from artists like Lady Gaga, and more,” Boyd said. “At this concert specifically, we will be playing a variety of music, so we could go from ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling’ by Justin Timberlake to ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ by Van Morrison. We will mainly be playing upbeat, fun music to get people up and dancing. We want to engage the entire crowd.”

There are seven members in The Heroes: Mattie Mills (vocals), Amber Lee Duke (vocals), Laymon Davis (bass guitar, vocals), Mark Moorhead (keyboards, vocals), Art Fisher (sax, flute, percussion, vocals), Val Kostadinov (guitar, vocals), and Tommy Boyd (guitar, vocals).

In addition to being a member of the band, Boyd is a part of the Symphony in the Park board.

“I am actually a part of the group that picks the bands that will play at this summer concert series. We have never had a band play that did not want to come back. It’s that amazing,” he said. “I live in this community, so this is always a very special performance for me. We love the venue, and the sound system is amazing.”

The concert will begin at 5:30 p.m. with The Traveling Nobodys led by Kyle Smith, followed by the Scripps Ranch Old Pros Rookie Air Band Spectacular. The Heroes will perform at 6 p.m.
