About the News section
This News section was designed to publicize community events, inform the public about local news and showcase the people and businesses of Scripps Ranch.
This News section will offer a little something new each day. Our goal is to answer the question, “What’s happening today in Scripps Ranch?”
The way we select “news” will be different. You might wonder what some of our features are doing in the news section. The simple reason is that this is a hyper-local site covering a relatively small and quiet community. Our approach to news is that everyone has a story to tell, and no story is too big or too small. Believe it or not, you will find it more interesting. We think you’ll be surprised.
For years we have witnessed personnel at newspapers, TV and radio stations reject certain news ideas because they were not serious enough or too hokey, not big-time enough. One problem with that type of thinking is that all the news outlets end up covering the exact same stories, as if they were cloning them. It’s repetitious. No one offers a different angle and they exclude other news of interest. No one offers an alternative. Another direct problem with that approach is that it excludes the news that local residents relate to, the news that directly affects their lives or piques their interest.
This is a digital newspaper and the way we look at news and what defines news is much different than conventional approaches of a few years ago. Scripps Ranch News will utilize updated news values, as studied and documented through media research and sometimes used in progressive newsrooms practicing innovation initiatives. We will also look at developing story angles differently, using the 20 different approaches suggested by Pulitzer Prize winning reporter and lecturer Lane DeGregory. This site will be highly visual and we intend to eventually showcase a steady stream of vivid photography. We will explore about 12 different types of article presentations and formats. We will provide a healthy mixture of short form reports and photo vignettes with a few long form narratives sprinkled in. You might not see this right away, but as we get our feet under us, we’ll begin implementing these concepts and using them more frequently.
Furthermore, Scripps Ranch News has the ability and willingness to adjust based on our readers’ needs and suggestions. We, the Scripps Ranch News staff, live here among you, and face the same day-to-day situations you face. We are open to your comments and we will listen to you. We don’t mind change.
Most importantly, this news site was designed so that the readers can participate in the creation of its contents.
