Back to School Part 2
Preparations for the first day of school, Aug. 28, are well underway for the public schools in the Scripps Ranch area. Here is a compilation of events, important dates and back to school facts for each of these schools:
Scripps Ranch High School

Interim principals: The San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) conducted an extensive search to find a principal to replace Ann Menna who retired in June, but the district was not satisfied with the candidates interviewed. Instead, SDUSD brought in Beverly Greco and Walter Fairley, two experienced, retired school administrators to lead the high school on an interim basis.
Kick-Off: Students who are currently enrolled may take care of several school necessities at one time by attending Kick-Off. They can pick up textbooks, get yearbook and ID cars photos taken and buy school items. Kick-off for seniors is today, Aug. 17, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Seniors will have their ID card photo taken at Kick-Off. Please note that colleges will receive your ID card photo with transcripts, so plan accordingly. Kick-Off for juniors is also today, 10 a.m. to noon. Kickoff for sophomores is Friday, Aug. 18 from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Kick-Off for freshmen is Monday, Aug. 21, 7:30 to 11 a.m. Kick-Off forms may be found at bit.ly/2fMTuye.
Teachers report: SRHS teachers report for duty in preparation for the school year on Wednesday, Aug. 23.
First day of school: Students report to the quad by 7 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 28 to receive class schedules.
Student portraits: Students may contact Prestige Portraits to schedule their senior yearbook portrait session (purchase is optional): (858) 935-6969. Sessions must be completed by Oct. 13 for inclusion in the yearbook.
Marshall Middle School

New vice principals: Two new vice principals have been selected for Marshall Middle School. They are Kate Moffatt and Steve Olds. An extensive search was conducted by the San Diego Unified School District, as described by Irwin during a public meeting on the subject held in June.
Course selections were emailed to families this summer. If your child’s courses are not correct, contact their counselor on Aug. 18 or 21 only. Contact info: www.marshallmiddle.org/counseling.
Orientation: New student orientation will be held on Aug. 25 for students and parents. Students with last names beginning with A to L will meet from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Students with last names beginning with M to Z will meet from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
First day of school: Students should arrive on campus between 7 and 7:30 p.m. They may locate their first period class on posted rosters. Official schedules with complete information will be distributed to students during first period.
Enrollment packet pickup: Drive by to pick up all of your fall enrollment paperwork on Monday, Aug. 21, between 7:30 to 9 a.m. or between 4 and 6 p.m. in the parking lot. Families of students in grades 1 to 5 should turn in their completed fall enrollment packet and pick up their child’s tentative class placement on Friday, Aug. 25 between 4 and 6 p.m.
Kindergarten: Learn about Kindergarten at Dingeman Elementary. Meet your teacher and tour classrooms on Friday, Aug. 25, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the multi-purpose room.
All-Grades Back to School Meetup: Meet from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26 in Scripps Ranch Community Park, 11454 Blue Cypress Drive.
First Day of School Celebration for Parents: Mingle, enjoy refreshments and learn about volunteer opportunities on Aug. 28, 7:40 a.m.
Back to School Night: Parents of students in first to fifth grades are invited to visit their student’s classroom for Back to School Night on Thursday, Aug. 31 from 5 to 7 p.m. (parents only).
Ellen Browning Scripps Elementary School

TK/K Back to School Night: Back to School Night for parents of students in transitional kindergarten and kindergarten will be held on Thursday, Aug. 24 (parents only).
Orientation: Orientation for transitional kindergarten, kindergarten and new students will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 25. A volunteer Fair will begin at 10 a.m.
Posting party: A posting party will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 25 at the front gates. Treats from Yogurt heaven will be served and a Spirit Wear sale will he held.
Red carpet: Ellen Browning Scripps Elementary goes first class students are welcome to take photos as they walk the red carpet on the first day of school at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 28.
Kindergarten half days: Students in kindergarten will have half days Monday, Aug. 28 to Friday, Sept. 1.
Back to School Night grades 1-5: Back to School night for grades 1 through 5 will be held Thursday, Aug. 31.
Open House: Innovations Academy will hold an Open House from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 24.
First Day of School: The first day of classes will start at 8:45 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 28.
Back to School FFO Luncheon: The Family Faculty Organization will sponsor a back to school luncheon for teachers and staff om Thursday, Aug. 24 from noon to 2 p.m.
TK/K Teacher Meet & Greet: Meet the teachers for transitional kindergarten and kindergarten at 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 25. A play group with popsicles will follow on the kindergarten playground.
Volunteer Fair: A volunteer Fair will be held on the first day of school, Monday, Aug. 28.
First week of school: Students in transitional kindergarten and kindergarten will have minimum days the entire first week of school.
Back to School Nights: Back to School Night for fourth and fifth grades will be Thursday, Aug. 31. Back to School Night for TK, K, first, second and third grades will be Tuesday, Sept. 12.

TK/K tours: Class lists for transitional kindergarten and kindergarten students will be posted at 8 a.m. at the school. Classrooms will be open from 8:30 to 9 a.m. School tours will be held from 9 to 11 a.m.
Teacher and room number assignments through email:Teachers and room numbers for students in first through fifth grades will be emailed directly to parents on the evening of Friday, Aug. 25. Class rosters will not be posted in the lunch arbor this year.
