Huge line appears for ribbon cutting

A line of approximately 135 eager customers waited in the bright morning sunlight on Friday, June 1, to enter the new See’s Candies store in the Scripps Ranch Shopping Center, 9870 Hibert St., near Trader Joe’s market.

Store staff members along with See’s officials presided over the ribbon cutting as a representative of California 77th District Assemblyman Brian Maienschein’s office read a declaration and cut the ribbon with giant scissors.

“This is great. I mean the line is around the block and we love how loyal our fans are,” said Julie Moldafsky, an assistant marketing manager for See’s. “This is such an incredible showing.”

Moments before, See’s staff could be heard cheering before exiting the store to greet customers. Kristi Brady, district sales manager for See’s Candy Shops, Inc., made sure the day’s activities proceeded without a hitch and helped pass out gift certificates and free treats to the happy crowd.

See’s staff allowed groups of customers from the line to enter the store, and the shoppers were not disappointed as each was handed a free sample, a goodie bag and other treats. Inside, the staff was cheerful, patient and helpful amidst all the excitement.

The popular candy brand has a long and storied history in California. Canadian chocolate salesman Charles A. See moved to Los Angeles with his family and widowed mother, Mary See, and opened the first See’s shop in 1921, selling Mary’s sweet candy.

See’s has grown to more than 200 shops across America. Many of Mary See’s original candies are still made today, including peanut brittle, chocolate walnut fudge, Victoria toffee, hand-dipped bon bons and maple walnut creams.

“We’re incredibly excited to be here,” Moldafsky said of the new, local store. “We have a great following in San Diego. It’s our goal to get as much delicious candy into as many people’s hands as we can.”
