The 2017-2018 school year is well underway in Scripps Ranch and there are plenty of upcoming events on the schedule. Here is a brief listing of happenings at local schools:

Marching Band & Color Guard Tournament: Experience the sights and sounds of the 20th annual SRHS Marching Band & Color Guard Tournament on Oct. 7 at Scripps Ranch High School. This event showcases marching bands from throughout Southern California. Sponsorships are greatly appreciated. See the Scripps Ranch High School Music website for details: srhsmusic.com

Marching Band fundraisers: The Scripps Ranch Marching Band is kicking off the new school year and tournament season with two fundraisers. The first one is on Wednesday, Sept. 13th at the Kebab Shop located at 9450 Mira Mesa Blvd. The Kebob Shop will donate 50 percent of proceeds purchased all day when presented with a flyer supporting the Music Program. The second fundraiser will be held at Applebee’s, located at 9480 Mira Mesa Blvd. There will be a Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 8 to 10 a.m. Tickets are $10 each, and half of the ticket sales benefit the music program. Purchase a ticket from any marching band member, from Mr. Shedd during school hours at the Band Room or at the door. The marching band program will use the funds raised to pay for new equipment.

Theatre Fund Drive: Marshall Mustang Theatre is in the midst of its fund drive. The cost of a theater production ranges from $10-20k. The program relies on support from the community to continue including performing arts in the students’ educations. Donations will go toward costumes, production costs, equipment costs and props. Hurricane fund a success: The Philanthropists Club thanks the students and staff of Marshall who donated to the Hurricane Harvey Fund. The club collected more than $600 to send to the American Red Cross.

Kona Ice: Kona Ice will be on campus at lunch every Friday. Prices: $3 for a Small, $4 for a Regular and $5 for a King size.

Library hours: The Library is open before school at 7 a.m., half-way through lunch, and after school until 3 p.m. (Fridays 2:30 p.m.). If students choose to go to the Library at lunch, they must meet at the top of the paseo and supervision will let them up at 10:55 a.m. These students must stay in the Library the rest of the lunch period.

Flag Football: The deadline for turning in rosters for lunchtime sports flag football is Thursday, Sept. 14. The league will start on Thursday, Sept. 21. There will be a mandatory captains meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 19. Mr. B will be at the C Building lunch court Sept. 14 to collect rosters, deposits and permission slips.

Junior Model United Nations Club: Students interested in an exciting experience focusing on international relations, peace building and human rights can join the Junior Model United Nations (JMUN). Taking part in the JMUN Club will also help enhance research, writing, oral communication and teamwork skills. The JMUN Club will be meeting every Wednesday after school from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Students will be actively involved in learning, writing and talking about global issues in preparation for the JMUN two-day conference. The first meeting will be in Room A103 on Wednesday, Sept. 13 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Contact Ms. Fox at sfox1@sandi.net.

Math Counts Club: Do you feel like math is a subject you are interested in? Does competing in a prestigious math competition appeal to you? If so, join the Marshall Middle School Math Counts Club. You will learn very advanced math. The first meeting is on Friday, Sept 15 in the Theater at Marshall Middle School from 6 to 7 p.m. Attend this first meeting to find out all the details. Bus Program Meeting: A meeting about the Parent Paid Bus Program will be held Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 5 p.m. in the campus Theater.

Family Dinner Night: Dingeman Elementary is holding a family Dinner Night fundraiser Thursday, Sept. 21. Hungry students and their families can enjoy a meal from the Kebab Shop, 9450 Mira Mesa Blvd., any time from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., and 50 percent of the proceeds will be donated to the school. In addition, those craving a sweet treat can visit Yogurt Heaven, 12010 Scripps Summit Drive, on the same day between 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. for a cup of yogurt, and 25 percent of the purchase will be donated to the school. Art Corp Orientation: Help bring art to your child’s classroom by volunteering for Art Corps. Parents are needed to teach or assist with six to eight classroom art lessons throughout the year. Find out more at the Art Corp Orientation on Thursday, Sept. 14, from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room. Meet this year’s Art Corps volunteers. Get the new Art Corps training and event schedule, including Family Art Nights and the Dingeman Art Show. Enjoy some refreshments and find out more about this program. You don’t have to be an artist to volunteer for Art Corp. Whether you would like to teach or assist with a lesson, every class needs parents to help bring art to the classroom. Fifth Grade Family Science Night: Parents of fifth graders should sign up for Family Science Night for Grade 5 as soon as possible to reserve a spot. The event will be held Oct. 5. Picture Day: Friday, Sept. 15 will be student Picture Day all day at Jerabek Elementary.

Minimum day: Tuesday, Sept. 19 will be a minimum day for teacher professional development. School will end at 12:25 p.m. that day.

FFO Pledge Drive: The Jerabek Elementary Family Faculty Organization (FFO) funds many of the programs the school offers to enrich the children’s education. The Jerabek pledge drive is the FFO’s largest fundraiser of the entire year with 100 percent of the proceeds going directly to the school. The FFO encourages every family to participate in the Pledge Drive. Back to School Night: Miramar Ranch Elementary will hold its annual Back to School Night on Wednesday, Sept. 13. (Adults only, please) Teachers from K through fourth will present their information twice — first from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. and again from 6:15 to 7 p.m. Parents with two or more children at the schools can meet multiple teachers. Parents with fifth graders should go directly to their child’s home room at 5 p.m.

Running Club & Garden Corps: Running Club and Garden Corps has begun on the athletic field and in the school garden. Come early to run laps at Running Club or help tend the garden at Garden Corps. Both sessions start at 7:24 a.m. and end at 7:36 a.m. to give the kids enough time to line up for class.

Minimum Day: Wednesday, Sept. 20 will be a minimum day at Miramar Ranch Elementary. Classes will end at 12:10 p.m.

Character Education: Character Education volunteers for each class teach a simple monthly lesson reinforcing different character traits. Typical lessons involve reading a story, playing a game or sorting cards. Lesson plans and materials are supplied; you choose the grade-appropriate lesson that you feel most comfortable teaching. Help create a partnership of parents, teachers, administrators and children working together to develop good citizens. Ice Cream Social/Movie Night: Miramar Ranch Elementary School will hold its annual Ice Cream Social and Movie Night for students and their families from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22. Ice cream will be served at 6 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room until supplies run out. The movie will be screened on the school’s upper playground area. Both events are free.
