SCRIPPS RANCH WEEKEND

Sunday Night Jazz

Jerome Dawson and Wazabe Blue will bring a high-quality brand of sounds to Sunday Night Jazz at Sanctuary Lounge. This band is highly recommended. Visit the band’s website (jeromedawson.com) and listen to samples of their work. It’s hard not to become addicted to the smooth sounds.

The band’s musical style is described as “a blend of upbeat adult contemporary smooth jazz with favorites of rock, pop, funk, reggae and R&B hits.” Listen to their music for a while and you’ll hear hints of each, and they mix superbly. At least one selection is highlighted by rhyming, funky lyrics that can only be described as “awesome!”

Saxophonist Jerome Dawson is from San Jose, and has been performing since the age of 16. He has since played from coast to coast. The Wazabe Blue band is based in San Diego and plays throughout the area, with many performances in North County.

The evening will start with a unique twist as comedian P-Man will perform a one-hour show to warm up the crowd. P-Man will also play host for the evening.

Jerome Dawson and Wazabe Blue will perform Sunday night, July 30. Doors open at 5 p.m. The comedy show begins at 6 p.m. The band starts playing at 7 p.m. 

On Friday night, July 28, Sanctuary Lounge will feature the sounds of Keni Yarbro and his acoustic guitar, followed by DJ Gavin, 7:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.

DJ Smooth will provide the jams on Saturday night, July 29, from 8 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.

Sanctuary Lounge is located at 12090 Scripps Summit Drive, off Scripps Poway Parkway. Hours are 4-10 p.m. Mondays; 3-11 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays; 2 p.m.-midnight Thursdays; 2 p.m.-2 a.m. Fridays; and 4 p.m.-2 a.m. Saturdays. Visit sanctuaryloungesd.com.

Irresistible barbecue

One of the unforgettable scents one notices when walking toward the Scripps Ranch Farmer’s Market on any given Saturday is the sweet smell of smoking barbecue. That scent emanates from the mobile smoker behind the Smokin J’s BBQ booth in the market’s food court.

Smokin J’s dishes up a whopping portion of delectable barbecue flavor. Eat it at the market, if you have a big appetite, or take it to savor at home. The selection includes burnt ends; pulled pork and chopped chicken sandwiches; and ribs, three bones per rack.

CEO and pitmaster Jeremy George said the burnt ends are the most popular item he sells at the Farmer’s Market.

“Burnt ends is more of a Kansas City/Memphis type of thing,” he explained. “You take the point of the brisket that has a little more fat and chop that up.”

The perfectly smoked meat doesn’t get its incredible flavor quickly, according to George.

“Pretty much everything I smoke, I do a dry rub with,” he said. “The burnt ends, we smoke that for about 13 hours, then chop it into chunks, then smoke it another four hours in pork stock and barbecue sauce.”

The Scripps Ranch Farmers Market is a weekly family festival with a wide selection of vendors each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 10380 Spring Canyon Road, in the Innovations Academy parking lot.

Join the Fit for Hope benefit workout

A benefit workout to help the young women of GenerateHope, a non-profit that serves women who have survived sex trafficking trauma in San Diego, is set for Saturday, July 29, 8 to 11 a.m. at Old Poway Park, 14134 Midland Road.

This is a 90-minute fitness class presented by Xtend Barre Scripps Poway, with special guest instructors from Poway Pilates and Fitness Quest 10 of Scripps Ranch. One hundred percent of the proceeds go directly to GenerateHope, San Diego’s first integrated, long-term recovery home for sex trafficking victims.

Pet adoptions and low-cost vaccinations

The Scripps Ranch Unleashed pet supply store will host a handful pet events this weekend:

On Saturday, July 29, the Foundation for the Care of Indigent Animals will bring pets looking for homes to Unleashed from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Also on Saturday, Unleashed is offering Free Puppy Playtime to pet owners and their pups from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Scripps Ranch store. This is a one-hour puppy socialization time for puppies to play with one another. Pet owners must bring their pup’s vaccination records.

On Sunday, July 30, the San Diego Humane Society will bring a selection of homeless pets up for adoption from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

An Affordable Vaccination Clinic will be available to pet owners from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. this Sunday. State-licensed veterinarians will be on hand to help keep your pet healthy. Services provided will include vaccinations, microchipping, heartworm test and prevention, deworming, flea and tick control. All will be offered for a low cost.
