Poway Symphony Orchestra will honor America’s 250th
The Poway Symphony Orchestra will present “An American Celebration” on Sunday, May 31 at 4 p.m. at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, 15498 Espola Road.

Led by Conductor and Music Director John LoPiccolo, this special concert commemorates the 250th anniversary of the United States with a vibrant program of beloved American works that reflect the nation’s rich cultural heritage.
The program features “Rhapsody in Blue” by George Gershwin, performed by acclaimed guest pianist Dan Yu. Widely celebrated for its fusion of classical and jazz influences, the work remains one of the most iconic pieces in the American repertoire.
Yu is an accomplished soloist, chamber musician and educator. Born in China, he earned degrees in piano performance from UCLA and USC. In addition to his performing career, he is an active leader in music education, regularly serving as a competition juror and festival organizer in Southern California.
Additional highlights include “Fanfare for the Common Man” and selections from “Rodeo” by Aaron Copland, whose music evokes the expansive spirit of the American landscape, as well as selections from “West Side Story” by Leonard Bernstein, capturing the energy and diversity of American urban life. The program also includes works by Scott Joplin and Charles Ives, offering a rich and varied musical portrait of the American experience.
“American music tells our story in a uniquely powerful way,” LoPiccolo said. “From the bold optimism of Copland to the jazz-infused brilliance of Gershwin and the theatrical energy of Bernstein, this program celebrates the creativity, diversity, and spirit that define our nation. We’re especially excited to share this music with our community as we mark America’s 250th birthday together.”
