First day of school 2017

First day of school 2017

Anxious teachers will not be alone in greeting students and parents on the first day of public school in Scripps Ranch on Monday. The biggest heat wave of the summer has been predicted to welcome students as well.  A heat advisory is in effect through Wednesday.

A memo issued by the San Diego Unified School District assures parents that local schools will do everything possible to make sure students and staff are safe and comfortable during the school day. It stated that all schools have a Hot Weather Plan that will be implemented, if needed. Check with your school for a copy of their Hot Weather Plan or visit the district website for hot weather procedures: bit.ly/2wRawSo. Individual principals will alert parents if excessive heat warrants a minimum-day schedule.

The district asks parents to make sure their children are dressed in light, loose fitting clothing; and asks parents to encourage children to drink water throughout the day to ensure they get adequate fluids.

Traffic safety
Parents and adults taking students to school are encouraged to show patience and courtesy. Leave home in plenty of time and expect heavy traffic on the way, especially around school areas.

Obey traffic laws, slow down around schools, use extreme caution and be on the lookout for pedestrians and small children darting across the street.

Drivers should park only in legal parking areas. Do not park in or block private driveways, in red painted no parking lanes, on corners or in the middle of streets. Obey the laws and stay calm no matter how late you might be.

In addition, students and parents must cross streets only at designated crosswalks. Elementary schools in Scripps Ranch have student crossing guards on duty, and pedestrians should heed their directions. Furthermore, all drivers should be especially careful when approaching designated school crosswalks and intersections. Greatly reduce speeds and obey stop signs and directions by the student crossing guards. Be on the lookout for children who might accidentally dart into the street on this first day of school.

Possible traffic delays
Those attending Marshall Middle School can expect delays along Pomerado Road due to ongoing construction near the east end of the road by San Diego Gas & Electric. While no official word has been received, and the project was scheduled to be completed Aug. 26, equipment still dotted the side of the road and no work appeared to be underway as of Saturday at noon. An update on a SDG&E web page regarding the construction, named the Sycamore to Peñasquitos 230-kV Transmission Line project, was posted Friday, and construction time for Monday was posted as beginning at 8:30 a.m. and ending at 3:30 p.m. on Pomerado Road near Scripps Ranch Boulevard.
