See’s Candy sales benefit Grad Night

One might imagine local high school students holiday shopping, visiting with friends or possibly sleeping in on the first Saturday morning of Winter Break. That was not the case for Scripps Ranch High School (SRHS) senior Deanna Salinas who spent Saturday morning helping her mother, Nina Salinas, sell See’s Candies to raise funds for the high school’s 2018 Grad Night.

The pair could be seen behind their booth on Dec. 16 at the Scripps Ranch Farmer’s Market on this unexpectedly cool morning. Nina is a parent volunteer at SRHS, working to make the upcoming Grad Night a success. The school will get anywhere from 20 to 50 percent back on the price of See’s Candies sold, depending on the item, she explained.

Grad Night is a special event held each year to reward graduating seniors with a safe, supervised event to celebrate their high school graduation. This year, the SRHS graduating class will be heading to Knotts Berry Farm for a night of celebration and excitement with fellow classmates on June 9, 2018.

The graduates will gather at the school and be bussed to the theme park, returning at about 1 a.m. the next morning. The journey is long, so part of the funds raised will go toward buying snacks the graduates can enjoy on the way. The entire event is not cheap, so the funds will also go toward Grad Night scholarships for graduating seniors whose families cannot afford the cost.

“We’re trying to sell as much as we can to help reduce the costs of Grad Night,” Nina said. “We do restaurant fundraisers as well, so we’ll have another one in the spring time.”

See’s Peanut Brittle and Toffee-ettes are two of the items being sold to help raise funds for Scripps Ranch High School’s Grad Night.

Nina will keep selling See’s Candies into Christmas weekend to raise funds. The SRHS Grad Night booth with be open at the next Scripps Ranch Farmer’s Market on Saturday, Dec. 23. That will be a big day for the Farmer’s Market because Santa will make an appearance from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Farmer’s Market will be open from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. next Saturday, so there is a big window of time to make a last-minute purchase of See’s Candies without going to a mall.

Some of the selection of popular See’s Candies available for 2017 Winter Fundraising includes assorted chocolates in different amounts, nuts and chews, peanut brittle, molasses chips, Toffee-ettes, lollypops, a Mini-Holiday Assortment and another special assortment called the Santa Sleigh Box.

Molasses Chips are also among the goodies for sale.

Orders can also be placed by contacting Nina by email: ninasalinas@att.net.
