Women connect and learn by shared experiences

According to a Washington Post article by Diana Lind, Americans are spending less time with one-another and more time home alone. For many Scripps Ranch women who are members of the Welcome Club, that could not be more unlike their experience.
Each month, a Welcome Club meeting gathers members on the second Monday to take part in an entertaining presentation and a friendly dessert time. This month, staff from the Scripps Ranch Theatre presented a preview of the plays that are scheduled for this season. Being supporters of this community’s artistic asset for many years, each play draws a group from the club to a potluck supper at a member’s home followed by their attendance at the current performance at the theatre.
Scattered throughout the month, members can choose from card and dice games, craft making, book discussions and hiking adventures to make their days and evenings enjoyable.
Almost every month, two or three special events draw the members together again. This month a coffee and brunch gathering took place in Anne McClure’s scenic backyard overlooking Lake Miramar. It was the perfect spot on a summer morning to enjoy the company of friends.
A TGI, an evening event, also took place in August in Lynnell Hallock’s lavish garden. The potluck among the blooms was another of the summer occasions enjoyed by the members and their escorts.
The Gadabout this month will take the members to Coronado’s Lamb’s Players Theater’s afternoon performance of “The Golden Age of the Album,” a celebration of 1970s music. Since some members were dating and marrying during this era, it should be a festivity of warm memories.
July’s Gadabout was a train trip to and a tour of the mission at San Juan Capistrano. After enjoying the scenic ocean views on the train ride, and lunch at an open-air restaurant, the women toured the village rich in California history.
Next month, the Gadabout will be viewing the British masterpiece known as “Downton Abbey” at a nearby movie theater. And as is tradition, lunch will be part of the special day while the ladies share their reactions to the movie.
